Calorie Burn Calculator
By Karen
Monday, Sep 06, 2010 11:58
This activity calculator will give you your calorie burn by inputting your weight and how many minutes you worked out. All the activities from A to Z will fill in with your calorie burn. In short, it will tell you how many calories you eliminated by doing whatever activity you did.

Using this calculator will take some of the guess work out of how many calories you are burning. This is only an estimate. As with any calculation there are many variables. Men burn a few more calories for the same activity as women. People who have more muscles burn a few more calories than someone who has less muscle mass.

I think you will be very surprised at how many minutes it takes to burn off enough calories that are in your favorite dessert. My workout buddies and I have a joke when we are working out. When we get to about 100 calorie burn on the machines we are working out on; we laugh and say we burned enough calories for a banana.

Thinking in those terms really helps with determining if something is worth eating. You can eat your dessert if you have left enough calories in your eating plan for the day to account for the calories in that dessert.

I have worked on this calculator for months. I can't wait till you all can use this to help you in your journey.

Can You Really Die From Eating Outdated Pancake Mix?
By Karen
Sunday, Aug 22, 2010 12:54
I have gotten a new surge of emails warning not to eat outdated pancake mix or you can die. We don't use pancake mix in our house, but the warning was extended to include biscuit, cake, and brownie mixes. I decided to check if this warning was true on snopes.com. The URL is http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/pancake.asp

The warning came from a letter to Dear Abby in 2006. A mom wrote Abby warning that her son got sick after eating pancakes made from an outdated mix. She further explained that she researched if it had happened before and found an article about a 19 year old died from eating pancakes made from an outdated mix. This incidence happened in 2001.

In both cases the boys said the pancakes tasted funny, but continued to eat them. Rule of thumb, if it doesn't taste right something is wrong with it. Do not eat it! That goes for any product.

The 19 year old that died was allergic to mold. It was determined that the pancake mix contained 4 different types of mold. The box was opened for quite a long time and mold spores got into the mix. He died of an allergic reaction to the molds.

It is not the fact that the mix was outdated; it was the fact that mold spores had gotten into the mix.

For you to get sick or die you would have to be allergic to mold. Products that are sealed in a plastic bag wouldn't get spores into it until it was opened. The mold could also get into the mix before the mix was outdated. Make sure you keep all your mixes in a dry cool spot to help prevent mold.

I'll be talking to you soon.

What Does Pronation And Supination Mean?
By Karen
Thursday, Aug 19, 2010 01:33
Do your shoes wear out on the inside or maybe the outside of the sole?

Pronation is where you walk on the inside of your foot. It is an inward roll of your foot. If you look at the heel of your shoe you can see you have more wear on the inside of your shoe.

Supination is where you walk on the outside of your foot. It is an outward roll of your foot. If you look at the heel of your shoe you can see you have more wear on the outside of your shoe.

There are better shoes to purchase for each one of these conditions. I am working the details out for Sherri from Creative Orthotics on writing an article and video to help you pick out your athletic shoes.

She is amazing and very knowledgeable on this subject. She has been creating orthotics for over 20 years. She gave me a few hints on if your shoes have broken down.

First I want to explain the construction of a shoe. There is a mid sole, outer sole, inner sole, heel and upper of a shoe. The mid sole is the cushion between the outer sole that touches the ground and the upper which holds your foot in your shoe. Of course the inner sole is in the inside of the shoe and the heel is just that. Now that you know a little terminology here are the tips.

If there are any wrinkles in the outer sole they have started to break down. If there is any wear on the heal of the shoe or if the tread is smooth; it is time to replace your athletic shoe.

On the video she will be giving more tips and different ways to tie your shoes if you have issues with your shoe fitting.

Here are some tips when shopping for your athletic shoes. You should purchase your shoes at the end of the day. The reason for this is your feet swell. Always wear the socks you will be wearing in the shoes when trying new shoes on. Different socks feel differently in the same shoe. The last one is one of the most important tips. Do not buy shoes that are tight and you think they will stretch out or give enough to be comfortable. It is very important to buy the correct shoe with the correct fit.

I'll be talking to you soon.
